In the bad old days before we even had videos(what are videos I hear our younger audience cry!) books were one of the very few ways fans could get their Doctor Who fix outside of watching the program.
Target began began publishing novelisations of the tv stories and they became a hit hit.Since then the range of Doctor Who books has inceased substantially to include completely original stories featuring all the Doctors.
Reference books are also hugely popular, everything from Doctor Who cookbooks (I kid you not!) to encyclopedias of everything in the Who Universe.
